Pentecost Sunday
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend, we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, when the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit as tongues of fire came upon each of them. Suddenly, the Apostles found the courage to go out and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to a large crowd, and each person heard them in their native tongue. Many came to believe and were baptized that day.
As members of the Body of Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit at our baptism, and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are strengthened in us at our Confirmation, which traditionally happens on or around Pentecost Sunday. This is when we confirm our faith and commit to allowing the Holy Spirit to use us to do God’s will in our lives. If we are willing to completely surrender ourselves to God, the Holy Spirit can use us like he did the Apostles.
In this weekend’s Gospel, St. John tells us that on Easter Sunday, the disciples were in the upper room behind locked doors when Jesus appeared to them. When he appeared, he told them, “Peace be with you”, and breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit was with the Apostles before Pentecost, but Jesus was still in their midst. They didn’t truly understand their need for the Holy Spirit until after Jesus ascended into Heaven.
Ten days later, the disciples finally realized on Pentecost what it meant to surrender themselves to Christ and to allow the Holy Spirit to use them. As we have seen, not only did the Holy Spirit give them courage and understanding, but they were also given the ability to speak in languages they didn’t know to reach others from different nations. This is reassuring to us, as members of the Body of Christ, his Church, that when we do his will, he will help us carry it out. All we need to do is surrender everything to him.
May we surrender ourselves to Christ each day, allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us to do his will.
Your brother in Christ,
Deacon Manny
