The First Sunday of Lent
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today, on this First Sunday of Lent, Jesus sets the example for us as he allows the Holy Spirit to lead him into the desert, where he fasts and prays for forty days and nights. When he was at the end of his fast, and while he was still tired and hungry, the devil came to tempt him. Because he fasted and prayed, Jesus was able to show us how to surrender ourselves to our Heavenly Father while resisting each temptation sent his way. When Jesus willingly became one of us, he experienced everything that we do except for sin. The devil tried to use the desires of the flesh and even quoted Holy Scripture to try to get Jesus to do what he wanted. Jesus didn’t give in to the desires of the flesh or the misuse of God’s Word.
Like Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit guiding us as we begin our own journeys into the desert. As we fast and pray this Lenten Season, instead of just going through the motions and treating it as a time of suffering and sacrifice we need to endure, let's view our desert journey as a time to reconnect and surrender ourselves to God, and to find healing. Let’s reflect on our lives and ask ourselves: Am I taking time each day to spend alone with God in peaceful, quiet reflection, as a retreat from the hectic world we live in? Do I give to others in need and share Christ’s love and mercy with them? There will be some sacrifices we need to make along the way, but no one said our journey would be easy.
If we are willing to lay our burdens down at the feet of Jesus, he is willing to join us in our suffering as we join him in his. What better way to know someone than to experience their pain and suffering with them? Christ loves us and wants to have a personal relationship with each of us. He wants to forgive us all, but we need to be willing to accept his love and forgiveness and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us.
As we continue our Lenten journey through the desert together, may we find the healing we need through Christ, while helping those in need, and building a closer relationship with him.
Your brother in Christ,
Deacon Manny
