Bishop Stephen Berg's statement on the Aspen Acres Fire
“The state of Colorado is currently facing multiple wildfires that are impacting communities and natural landscapes. The Aspen Acres Fire burning in the area of Our Lady of Lourdes, Beulah, and St. Aloysius, Rye, the Ferris Fire is affecting the missions and communities of Dolores and Montezuma, while the Snyder Fire is impacting areas near the Grand Junction deanery. Additionally, the Gold Mountain Fire is burning near the missions in Silverton and Lake City. During this difficult time, it is important to keep all those affected by the fires, as well as the brave firefighters working tirelessly to control them, in your thoughts and prayers.
We thank God for the firefighters and civil agencies that have responded. Please keep all those affected by the fires and the firefighters in your prayers. This is to be a trying time for them, and we will be with them in our prayers and support.”
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Stephen J. Berg

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
When I was in my first year of high school, I had a school project. The project was about planting a bell pepper plant in a single pot. Each male student had to plant his own bell pepper. My teacher gave the class instructions on how to prepare the soil in our respective pots. I did not listen carefully. I just used the soil I found, which was mostly muddy. And so, when I planted the seed in my plant pot, it struggled to grow at the same pace as my classmates'.
It was then that I realized that I planted my bell pepper seed in bad soil. But I did not give up. I took care of my plant by watering it every day. I also added fertilizer to enrich the soil. Once in a while, I loosened the soil so the roots could grow easily. At the end of the school year, although I had used poor soil in my plant pot, my bell pepper grew because I took care of my plant, unlike my classmates, who did not bother to water theirs, so their plants died.
In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus emphasized the different kinds of ground where the seed fell. We are all rich soil when God creates us, and as we are baptized in the Church. Yet, in time, we could become bad soil when we let ourselves be consumed by sin. But the Lord, who is also the Sower, will not give up on us. He will continue to make sure that we grow to our full potential by the graces that He grants to us in so many ways, like the sacraments. We have to be cooperative in the grace that God is always bestowing upon us.
Have a blessed and fruitful week.
