The Fifth Sunday of Lent
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend, we hear the story of how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. Many of us have heard this story, as well as the many signs and wonders Jesus performed out of love and compassion for each life he changed. In our Gospel reading today, each person who talks to Jesus thinks he is too late to do anything. First, by Martha, who told Jesus that if he had been there, her brother would still be alive. She didn’t lose hope and still had faith. She told Jesus, “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” Then Mary also came out and told Jesus that if he had been there earlier, Lazarus wouldn't have died. Some of the Jews who were with her said the same. In their minds, it was too late; Lazarus died four days ago. What could Jesus do now?
How often do our ideas of Jesus limit what we believe he can do in our lives? We convince ourselves that he couldn’t use someone like us, or that the sin we committed is too big for him to forgive. Jesus, being God, created us, and he loves us despite what we have done. He became one of us and even suffered and died for us. Nothing is impossible for him, and he wants us to come to him so he can forgive us of all of our sins and use us to do his will. But we need to have faith that he can and will use us even in our weaknesses.
Jesus says to Martha and us, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Jesus came to save us out of love. We see the love he had for Lazarus and his sisters. He wants to have the same kind of relationship with us. He showed them that it wasn’t too late when he told Lazarus to come out, and he did, still wrapped in bandages.
Jesus is calling each of us in different ways. Will we have faith that he can use anyone who is willing? It isn’t too late or impossible for him to use us. All we need to do is have faith and answer his call.
Your brother in Christ,
Deacon Manny
