The Third Sunday of Lent
Dear Parishioners:
This weekend on our Lenten journey we are reminded of the choices we need to make every day: To choose to do God’s will in our lives, to accept his love and forgiveness, and to choose to share that love and forgiveness with others. We have a God who gives us many opportunities to do his will in our lives and in those times that we fall short we can ask for forgiveness knowing he is loving and merciful.
In our Gospel reading of Luke, Jesus tells us to take advantage of every moment we must repent and reconcile with God. These tragic events that happened weren’t because these people were greater or worse sinners than others. Which seemed to be the popular belief at that time. Instead, they died so suddenly that they may not have a chance to repent. Jesus is telling us that we have a chance to repent now before anything happens to us because “We don’t know what tomorrow will bring us.” (Proverbs 27:1) He is also letting us know that we can all be forgiven no matter what we have done and that all sin in our lives separates us from God.
Our Gospel reading ends with one of Jesus’s parables. A landowner who asks the gardener to cut down a fig tree since it hasn’t produced fruit for three years. The gardener asks the owner for one more year to cultivate and fertilize the soil, and if it doesn’t produce fruit then he can cut it down. Christ is our advocate, and he wants to cultivate us with his love and mercy. How many times in life do we get another chance? The world may not give us a lot of chances, but God has given us many. It's our choice if we want to make use of this chance Jesus has earned for us with his very life.
God has blessed us with so much in our lives. Let's thank him for all he has given us. This Lenten season may we continue to use the blessings he has given us to share his love and mercy with others.
Your brother in Christ
