The Third Sunday of Lent
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On this Third Sunday of Lent, Jesus shows love and compassion to a Samaritan woman as he reveals who he is to her. At first, she wasn’t sure about him. Why would he be at the well at the time she went? When he asks her for a drink, she even asks him why a Jew would be asking a Samaritan woman for a drink, knowing that most Jews won’t go near a Samaritan, let alone use something of theirs. When he tells her he can give her living water, we see her thirst gradually grow. She doesn’t completely understand what this living water is that he is offering, but she knows she has to have it. When he tells her about the things she has done in a loving, compassionate way, she knows there is something about him. She even brings up the Messiah, the Christ who is to come, and he tells her, “I am he, the one speaking with you.” Immediately, she knows that he is the Messiah and the living water he speaks of. Then she goes and tells everyone in the village. They came out to see for themselves because of what she said and witnessed, and many came to believe.
As Christians, we received Christ, our living water, at our baptism. Like the Samaritan woman, we aren’t worthy to receive his love and forgiveness, but he offers it to us freely. All we need to do is believe and accept his gift, allowing him to work in us and through us to do his will. This is a choice we need to make daily. Each day, Christ continues to quench our spiritual thirst as our living water. He knows we will make mistakes, and he loves us despite our faults. This is why we come to him in reconciliation as often as we need to seek his forgiveness. He wants others to know of his love and mercy, and he wants us to be like the Samaritan woman who went and told her village about him and what he did for her. He wants us to share the gift of his love and mercy with everyone we meet.
May we continue on our journey, choosing to follow Christ each day, as we share his gift of love and mercy to all, so that he can quench their spiritual thirst.
Your brother in Christ,
Deacon Manny
