Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Covenant is a war action-drama movie set in Afghanistan. It is a story between a U.S. Army Special Forces Master Sergeant and an Afghan interpreter. Their names are John Kinley and Ahmed Abdullah, respectively. John’s team was ambushed during a patrol. He was heavily injured, and his teammates were all dead. Ahmed was the only one who was unhurt. He did his best to bring John to safety, and he succeeded. When John Kinley was brought back to the United States, he learned that Ahmed and his family were in hiding in Afghanistan because the Taliban wanted them. So, John Kinley did his best to go back and look for Ahmed and his family, to rescue them and bring them to the United States. John did not want Ahmed's kindness to go unrewarded.
The story of John Kinley and Ahmed Abdullah is a good example of the Gospel for this Sunday. John Kinley and Ahmed Abdullah are not family, obviously. Yet, they went out of their way to do what is good, to save each other’s lives, especially with Ahmed. He had everything to lose, even his own family, but he took John into his care because He knew that it was the right thing to do.
Jesus taught His disciples to go beyond family boundaries to do good to others. Yet, the Lord challenged them not just to do good. He wanted them to lose their lives so that they might find life. True living is not just being comfortable with our safe spaces, which we usually find in the family. But true living is to give up what we have for the good of the other people around us. So, keep on giving yourself to those in need of help.
Blessings to all.
