Bishop Stephen Berg's statement on the Aspen Acres Fire
“The state of Colorado is currently facing multiple wildfires that are impacting communities and natural landscapes. The Aspen Acres Fire burning in the area of Our Lady of Lourdes, Beulah, and St. Aloysius, Rye, the Ferris Fire is affecting the missions and communities of Dolores and Montezuma, while the Snyder Fire is impacting areas near the Grand Junction deanery. Additionally, the Gold Mountain Fire is burning near the missions in Silverton and Lake City. During this difficult time, it is important to keep all those affected by the fires, as well as the brave firefighters working tirelessly to control them, in your thoughts and prayers.
We thank God for the firefighters and civil agencies that have responded. Please keep all those affected by the fires and the firefighters in your prayers. This is to be a trying time for them, and we will be with them in our prayers and support.”
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Stephen J. Berg

The 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend, Jesus calls us to rest in him. He tells us in the Gospel of Matthew 11:28-29, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. He wants to free all of us from our burdens, no matter how heavy they may be. He invites us all to take his yoke, and as members of the Body of Christ, we should be yoked with him. A yoke was used to join a pair of oxen or cattle together so they could share the weight of the burden they were pulling. Jesus doesn’t just want to help us with our burdens; he tells us in Matthew 11:30, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” His burden is light because he is the one carrying our burdens for us. His yoke is easy, and he freely allows us to be joined with him. All we need to do is accept his gift and surrender ourselves to him.
He came to free us all from the burden of sin. He doesn’t want us to be yoked with the world and what it has to offer. The world gives us a false sense of freedom. Still, instead, we become overburdened trying to live up to its superficial standards, which normally involves putting ourselves first above all else. When someone is of this world, it is easy for them to become entrapped by sin. It may start small and subtle, maybe even unintentional, but then it gradually grows and grows until they don’t realize how bad it has gotten. Those who remain yoked to the world have burdens that become heavier and heavier until they can’t bear it anymore. They don’t know how to break free or who can help free them from this yoke.
Christ will free all who seek him. His yoke doesn’t enslave us like the yoke of the world. Instead, it frees us from our burdens. We need to be willing to let him take them from us and give control over to him so we can do his will.
May we choose to remain yoked with Christ, surrendering ourselves to him and showing others that Christ wants to free them as well.
Your brother in Christ,
Deacon Manny
