MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
(LOOK BEYOND THE BREAD YOU EAT AND THE WINE YOU DRINK)
Dear Friends in Christ:
Today, we celebrate “Corpus Christi”, the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, a celebration that dated back to 1264 AD during the reign of Pope Urban IV. The Church teaches that, the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ under the appearance of bread and wine. The Eucharist, therefore, is the source and summit of Christian life (Lumen Gentium No 11 & CCC 1324).
Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Gospel of St John says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven, if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever…. the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh” (John 6:51). Jesus gave his flesh to us at the last supper when he said, “this is my body…. this is my blood, do this in memory of me”
At Mass, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the instrumentality of the priest, the substance of bread and wine changed to the substance of Body and Blood of Christ (Transubstantiation). In Mysterium Fidei No 15, the Church teaches that, Christ is substantially present whole and entire in the Eucharist. Therefore, the accidentals of bread and wine such as size, color, shape, taste remain after the substantial changes have taken place. These accidentals are not accidentals of Christ but of bread and wine.
It is important to note that, the Eucharist, as a meal, creates and fosters communion, i.e. unity in the Church (Ecclesia de Eucharistia No 40). We also receive nourishment and strength from the Eucharist. The promise to eternal life is assured for those who receive it in the state of grace (Everlasting Life).
Therefore, as we partake of this great mystery, let us examine our consciences. Do I believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist? Do I approach the Altar with a clean heart? Do I make necessary preparations (Confession) before receiving the Eucharist? Is there any change in my life since I have been receiving it? May God help us to become what we receive. Amen.
Happy Sunday
