The Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners:
This weekend we witness Jesus’ first miracle or sign as John calls them throughout his Gospel. Most of us are familiar with Jesus turning water into wine. There is so much we can reflect on in this Gospel reading. First, we have the need of the newlywed couple who ran out of wine before their reception was over. Then we have the intercession of Mary on this couple's behalf to Jesus asking for his help. We also have Jesus not telling his mother no but letting her know that this isn’t his time. Even though he said this he chooses to help anyway. This is a great example of how powerful the intercession of Mary is when there is a need, and we ask her to pray for us.
Then we have the servants and Mary telling them to do whatever Jesus tells them. This shows us how she always leads us to her son in everything she does. These servants not knowing who Jesus was were still willing to do what he said. They took this water they had just drawn to the headwaiter. Who knows what consequences they would have faced if they had taken him plain water to serve instead of wine. We can learn from their willingness to do what Jesus asks of them. They did what he asked even though they had no way of knowing they had wine in their jars after they filled them up with water. I am sure they became believers that day just like the disciples who saw what Jesus had done and began believing in him.
May all the signs of Christ that we read about throughout the Gospel strengthen our faith in him, and our willingness to do his will in our lives.
Your brother in Christ
